Girls and Women's Month 2025

Girls & Women’s month exists to shine the spotlight on girls and women in football and grow female participation at the grassroots level.

In 2024, we had 13 clubs, 37 schools and a whopping total of 1,119 participants getting involved in incredible Girls & Women’s Month activities across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

Now is the time to start thinking about what activities your club/school might want to do in 2025.

We recommend you Keep it simple + Keep it fun!

As an example, Melville AFC ran a Girls & Women’s Jamboree, with training sessions for women and girls, a sausage sizzle, some freebies and a pre season youth game to enjoy.

Other events ranged from Wahine Referee Workshops, Coach Education, seminars on the female athlete body, and Female GK Coaching Sessions, through to Pre Season Tournaments like the Taupo Janine Giddy Senior Women’s tournament.

Activities for younger footballers included football festivals, have-a-go days, easter egg hunts, referee fun flag rotations and Nat’s personal favourite – a water slide!

Our Women’s Development Officer, Nat Broadhead, will be sending out some ideas direct to clubs in early 2025, so watch out for those.

Nat will get to as many events as possible, with signage, flags and maybe even some freebies, so get those events in the calendar.

Drop Nat an email or give her a call if you’d like some support & ideas on how to bring your idea to life.

Shining a spotlight on our Kohine and Wahine

Girls and Women’s Week runs during March each year shine the spotlight on girls and women in football and grow female participation at the grassroots level. During March, we introduce girls and women to the beautiful game across New Zealand.

Girls & Women’s month was an initiative that came with the FIFA Women’s World Cup, aimed at sparking discussions around gender equality and ensuring we remove the barriers to entry for women and girls.

The month sees initiatives designed to increase and retain female players, administrators, coaches, referees and fans.
